Protect Yourself from Wire Fraud

Wire fraud targeting real estate closings is one of the most common forms of cybercrime affecting home buyers and sellers today. Take a moment to understand how to protect yourself before you wire any funds.

1

Never trust wiring instructions sent by email

Great American Title Agency will NEVER change wire instructions via email, and we will never ask you to send funds to a new or “updated” account by email alone. If you receive an email — even one that appears to come from your escrow officer, lender, or agent — instructing you to wire funds or providing new account details, treat it as suspicious.

2

Always verify by phone, using a number you look up yourself

Before wiring any funds, call your escrow officer directly to confirm the instructions verbally. Use a phone number you look up independently — from your closing documents or our website — never a number provided in the suspicious email itself.

3

Confirm with your bank immediately after sending a wire

After sending a wire, call your escrow officer to confirm the funds were received. Wire transfers are difficult to reverse once sent, so speed matters if something looks wrong.

4

Watch for red flags

Last-minute changes to wiring instructions, urgent or pressured language, slightly altered email addresses, and requests to keep the change confidential are all common signs of a scam.

Think You've Been Targeted?

If you believe you've received fraudulent wiring instructions, or have already sent a wire based on suspicious instructions, act immediately:

  1. Call your escrow officer right away at (602) 445-5525.
  2. Contact your bank or financial institution and ask them to issue a wire recall.
  3. File a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
  4. Contact your local police department to file a report.
